In another study, a group of Russians scientists reported that parts of the seabuckthorn plant helped normalize chemicals of the neuro-endocrine system in rats (such as elevated levels of a drenocorticotrophin) that are typically caused by stress.



Seabuckthron and Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Cardiovascular disease encompasses more than just heart attacks It includes coronary artery disease ( heart attacks), heart failure ( not merely the stopping of the heart but rather its inability to effectively pump blood), cardiomyopathy ( diseases that affect the heart muscle) and vascular disease including strokes and other diseases associated with the blood vessels and blood circulation

Central to all of these conditions is the heart, a very specialized muscle. In addition to the heart, the vascular structure, or the system of blood vessels that carry blood to every part of the body, is also a critical component to cardiovascular health. Vascular disease includes any condition that affects your circulatory system. Obviously, the heart and the vascular structure work inseparably. As the heart beats, blood moves through the vascular or circulatory system.

Factor contributing to the decline of cardiovascular health are multifaceted. Sometimes the problems stem from free radical damage; other time problems arise from a poor diet that promotes high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Age plays a major factor in heart disease, as do genetics. A lack of consistent and effective physical exercise can also be a cause of poorly functioning circulatory system

Seabuckthorn offers a broad spectrum of nutrients that may effectively address many of the problems associated with cardiovascular disease. There have been numerous studies conducted on the possible effects of seabuckthorn on heart disease. In Finland, a placebo controlled, double-blind study showed that pulp oil from seabuckthorn increased the level of high density lipoprotein cholesterol in a group of 49 human patients over the course of foru months. High density lipoprotein ( or HDL) is the good kind of cholesterol. The higher the HDL level the better. In other words, seabuckthorn positively affected cholesterol levels.

Another experiment done by researchers in the United States also tested that effects of seabuckthorn juice on cholesterol levels. 20 male patients were given a placebo or sebuckthorn juice for eight weeks. This trial shoed that those men who were given lipoprotein to oxidation. Low desity lipoprotein ( orLDL) is the bad kind of cholesterol, and when it oxidizes it may put a person at risk to develop atherosclerosis. Once again, Seabuckthorn led to a healthier cholesterol profile, but by effecting a different component this time.

A third cholesterol study, perfomed by a group of Chinese researchers, showed that in mice, administration of flavonoids from seabuckthorn significantly reduced the animal’ levels of serum cholesterol and serum triglyceride, both of which are considered major contributors to heart disease.

Additionally, in 2003 Chinese researchers tested the effect of seabuckthorn on myocardial hypertrophy ( or enlargement of the heart) These researchers found that an extract of seabuckthorn helped improve heart function, and tghey recommended the possible use of seabucktorn for hypertension( high blood pressure) and other chronic heart problems.

The last studies I will mention show the possible positive effect of seabuthorn on storke victims and the hose at risk of stroke Occlusive storkes are caused when there is a blood blockage to the brain. This blockage can come in the form of a blood clot.

Two different studies, one in 200 and the other in 2003 , both showed that sebuckthorn helped decrease the platelet aggregation. This means that it helped reduce the chance of blood clotting. The Study in 2000 used a sample of 12 men; the later study used mice as its subjects. In a third study, a team of scientists created and arterial blockage in the brains of rats. They then fed some of the rats seed oil from seabuckthorn. Using MRIs, they found that the rats treated with the seabuckthorn oil had a reduction in the size of the occlusion ( or blockage) when compared to those mice not given the seed oil. These researchers concluded that seabuckthorn may have a protective effect on cerebral infarction. ( or blockages in the brain.)



Seabuckthorn and Inflammatory Pain.

Now that one in three Americans suffers from arthritis or chronic joint problems, pain relief has become an extremely important goal in medicine. Those who don’t have arthritis may still suffer pain associated with inflammation with sport injuries, headaches and myriad of other problems. At times, the symptoms of pain are literally immobilizing.

Pain is closely related to inflammation, which is the body’s response to an injury. But while inflammation is a defense mechanism, it can also cause considerable difficulties when it becomes chronic. Several studies have shown that one of the most exciting flavonoids in seabuckthorn, quercetin, is especially good at helping control inflammation. One study showed that rats injected with carrageenan ( a well-known inflammatory substance) and quercertin from seabuckthron had a decreased inflammatory response that rats injected with only carrageenan. Another report showed that using quercetin from seabuckthorn may help with connective tissue damage often a result of chronic inflammation.

In 2005, Chinese researchers reported that using the flavones from sebuckthorn increased healing in rats with tedon and ligament injuries by 30- 50 percent.
